Your spine consultation
A consultation is an opportunity to understand your symptoms, discuss your options and decide on the next steps. Seeing a spine surgeon does not mean that you will need an operation.
Do I need a referral?
Self-referrals are welcome. A GP or specialist referral can provide useful medical history and help coordinate your care, but you can contact the practice directly to request a consultation.
An insurer or funding provider may have separate referral or approval requirements. Check these before your appointment.
Requesting a visit
Use the consultation request form or call the practice. We respond within 2 business days, with an in-person consultation within 2 weeks. The team will contact you to arrange a date and time.
Sending the form requests an appointment; it does not reserve a confirmed time. For a medical emergency, call 111 rather than waiting for a response to an online request.
Preparing for your consultation
Our team will contact you before your visit to arrange any referral letter, insurance details and relevant imaging or test results. Let them know where previous scans were performed.
You may find it useful to note when your symptoms began, what makes them better or worse, treatments you have tried, and what you would like help returning to. Bring your questions and an up-to-date medication list.
You are welcome to bring a family member, friend or support person. Tell the team beforehand if you need help with access or communication so that arrangements can be discussed.
What happens during the appointment?
Dr Baecker reviews your symptoms, medical history and previous tests, and may perform a physical examination. He explains any further investigations needed and discusses treatment options once the assessment is complete.
You can ask about the expected benefits, possible risks and alternatives to any proposed treatment, including what may happen if you choose to wait. You do not need to decide about surgery before these questions have been discussed.
Fees, insurance and ACC
Contact the practice for the current consultation fee and ask what it includes. Investigations and treatment may have separate costs.
If you plan to use private insurance or ACC, ask the team about the arrangements relevant to your appointment and confirm any authorisation requirements with your insurer or ACC. Coverage and any amount you need to pay depend on your individual approval and policy or claim.
